Writing works to preserve one’s own experience, knowledge, and thinking. If reading guides people to know the world, writing helps them communicate with it. Nevertheless, writing also creates gaps between one’s thinking and the other’s understanding of it. To bridge the gap requires an iteration of rethinking and rewriting, like an endless journey between oneself and the world. Writing thus leads people to repetitively learn their internal relation to themselves and external relation to the world. Further bringing people opportunities to express themselves, writing also marks a trace of their articulation and creation waiting for the world’s reading. If history records the voices of those in power, the literary theorist Gayatri C. Spivak asks, “can the subaltern speak?” Yes, I hope, with writing, the subaltern can speak.
