Among a number of academic discourse genres, abstracts have succinctly been recognized as one of the most pivotal means of communication. Since abstracts typically provide readers with a brief summary of the study being reported, they also play a crucial role impacting the acceptance or rejection of submitted research articles for publication, and consequently determining scientists’ professional growth and success to a certain extent.
The workshop demonstrates how abstracts can be systematically approached to discover the writing conventions of this particular genre through what is called “move structures.” They provide practical guidance in organization through an analysis of the most common move structures employed in abstract writing. To complement the move structures, tips on choices of language in abstracts are included. Towards the end of this workshop, participants will get hands-on experience in writing up their own research abstracts. Comments and suggestions from the speaker will be provided on an individual basis.
